Daring to stand out is rare, investing in designing functional luxury with an unapologetic point of view is even rarer. When we began brainstorming this renovation, we did something rather unique… we purposefully did NOT design it for our clients. Rather, we designed the home for who we believe the end user will be, a multi-generational international family.
Situated on a double lot in The Oaks Bayside, the main house and guest house had been added to and altered since the main house was constructed in 1990. While our work on the guest house has yet to begin, we knew both structures needed to relate better to one another… more on that later. The bigger transformation however came with reprogramming the spaces and their function in the main house.
Each space was thoughtfully designed to be highly functional and easy to maintain. This was achieved with many low maintenance finishes, amenities spread throughout the home and creating more efficient flow for modern families. It’s an experience traveling from one space to the next and discovering bold and unexpected design elements in every room.
For ‘95’, this isn’t the first time it has undergone a transformative renovation. Since 1990, it’s lived several lives. Admittedly, some of the elements were considered impressive for their era. However, with each iteration not successfully coordinating the old with new, it devolved into choppy spaces with a patchwork of balloon drapes, heavily stained paneling, and faux paint with Tuscan murals. It takes the right client, and right designers, to envision the potential.
Like many renovations, the project could be considered master class in ‘design archaeology’, unsure of what surprises are waiting to be discovered. Removing layers of dated oriental wallpaper and slate tile revealed trendy 1990s paint colors and original terracotta are just a few examples. More significant surprises forced us to rethink our original designs and remaining flexible to change was key to a successful outcome.
Throughout the design process, we were mindful of how we paired contemporary design with the existing items worth keeping. The larger challenges were deciding how to modernize the function of home and incorporating the new amenities throughout. To do a project like this the right way, costly changes to the floor plan, structure and mechanical systems were necessary. Thankfully, our clients understood and trusted us. Walls were opened for new traffic patterns, plumbing was moved, windows closed in, and exterior doors replaced with their more contemporary steel & glass counterparts are just a few examples. The result is a beautifully modernized home with thoughtful conveniences for today’s multi-generational families.
