A Day in the Life 22
As I had been traveling, my posts involved finds and inspiration from those areas. Though I am home now, navigating throughout the city here in Sarasota has also continued my “travel” inspiration in the form of repurposing…a term that in my opinion carries a slightly negative connotation when it comes to design, but when executed correctly it adds charm and personality to a space. Re-upholstering furniture is a common way to accomplish this…adding leather to a Victorian style chair instead of fabric, or choosing a funky pattern or texture (like velvet) for a love seat…however, it was the “uncommon” repurposing of unique items that caught my eye as we were out and about this week.
For those of you who don’t know, I have a background in lighting design from working in the engineering field. All that means is that I have a habit of “looking up” anytime I go into the space (as my wife can attest, I tend to be slightly critical of lighting in some cases…sorry!). But it was a creative use of whisky/bourbon decanters as light fixtures that made me say “Wow, those are very, very cool!”, so I had to share. I couldn’t help but think how perfect of an example this was of how thinking outside the box is a great way to add personality to a space! So, don’t be afraid to be creative, push the boundaries, and repurpose items in ways they may not have been originally designed for because it may just be that ideal solution to give your space that extra “pop” everyone is looking for.
